The Shanghai Marathon (abbreviated as “Shangma”) is the first marathon event in China named after a city.

It originated in 1996 and became a gold medal event of the Chinese Athletics Association in 2012.

In 2017, Shangma cancelled the half marathon event and officially entered the era of full marathon.

In 2020, Shangma was awarded the World Association of Athletics Federations Platinum Medal, becoming the first marathon race in China to receive this honor.

This year, Shangma has been upgraded to the only Abbott World Marathon Grand Slam candidate event in China, marking its entry into the ranks of the world’s top marathon events.
